US STOCKS-S&P, Nasdaq extend losses, fall 2 pct

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average was down 171.60
points, or 1.27 percent, at 13,291.73. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was down 28.13 points, or 1.91 percent, at
1,444.07. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 49.53
points, or 1.92 percent, at 2,526.45.

US STOCKS-Nasdaq falls 1 percent; Apple leads decliners

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average was down 100.07
points, or 0.75 percent, at 13,258.24. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was down 13.54 points, or 0.92 percent, at
1,460.37. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 28.51
points, or 1.10 percent, at 2,554.77.

US STOCKS-Indexes fall on fears of more credit problems

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average was down 30.98
points, or 0.23 percent, at 13,327.33. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was down 6.10 points, or 0.41 percent, at
1,467.81. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 17.07
points, or 0.66 percent, at 2,566.21.

PRESS DIGEST - Wall Street Journal - July 30

(Reuters) - * Dow Jones & Co. Inc.'s controlling shareholders,
the Bancroft family, were still deliberating late Sunday
whether to sell to News Corp. , which has offered $5
billion for the publisher.




* John Malone's Liberty Global Inc. is weighing a
bid for Virgin Media Inc. , for which the Carlyle Group
[CYC.UL] has already offered $8 billion to $10 billion.

(Bloomberg) -- The following stocks may rise or fall
in European markets. Prices are from the last close.

The Dow Jones Stoxx 600 fell 0.5 percent to 372.69. The Dow
Jones Stoxx 50 Index declined 0.4 percent to 3720.33. The Euro
Stoxx 50 Index, a benchmark for the 13 nations using the euro,
dropped 0.2 percent to 4244.58.

Dow Jones family owners face deadline on bid-source

(Reuters) - Rupert Murdoch's News Corp., owner of Fox News, the New
York Post and a sprawling global media empire, made its $60 a
share bid for Dow Jones, the publisher of the Wall Street
Journal, on May 1.




The board of Dow Jones endorsed the offer two weeks ago,
sending the deal to the Bancroft family for approval.

New home sales fall, durable goods orders weak

(Reuters) - Major U.S. stock indexes ended down more than two percent on signs of further deterioration in the U.S. housing market, a jump in oil prices and a worsening climate for financing corporate takeovers. That caused the New York Stock Exchange to impose curbs on computer program trading.




The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed down 311 points and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index closed down 35 points.

`Overlooked Asset,' Rupee Effect, Harry Potter and the Aftermath: Timshel

(Bloomberg) -- If Rupert Murdoch changed his mind
and bought Dow Jones & Co. in a stock swap, the purchase would
hardly dent News Corp.'s treasury.

The $5 billion that Murdoch has offered for the publisher
of the Wall Street Journal is equivalent to 204 million of his
company's Class A shares, which include voting rights, or 220
million non-voting Class B shares.

TREASURIES-Bonds steady on Bernanke's balanced view

(Reuters) - NEW YORK, July 19 - U.S. government debt prices
finished steady on Thursday, caught between warnings from
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke about inflation and
threats to growth from a weak housing market.




Sharp gains in stocks, driven by upbeat earnings news that
pushed the Dow Jones industrial average to an unofficial close
over 14,000 for the first time, also kept a lid on bond prices,
analysts said.

Dow tops 14,000 for first time

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average rose above 14,000 for the first time on Tuesday, boosted by optimism about corporate profits.

The blue-chip average rose to an intraday record of 14,002.60 within the first half-hour of trading.

U.S. Stock-Index Futures Fall; Merrill, Wells Fargo, Intel Drop in Europe

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. stock-index futures retreated
before quarterly reports from Merrill Lynch & Co., Wells Fargo &
Co. and U.S. Bancorp that may shed light on losses from mortgages
to borrowers with poor or limited credit.

Shares of Merrill Lynch and Wells Fargo declined in Europe,
as did those of Intel Corp., the world's largest computer-chip
maker, one of three Dow Jones Industrial Average companies due to
report earnings today. The other two, Johnson & Johnson, the
biggest U.S. health-products company, and Coca-Cola Co., the
world's largest soft drink maker, gained.

Most U.S. Stocks Decline, Led by Energy Producers; Verizon Shares Advance

(Bloomberg) -- Most U.S. stocks fell, led by
energy producers, after the price of natural gas dropped to a
six-month low.

Exxon Mobil Corp., ConocoPhillips and Chevron Corp. pushed
a gauge of energy producers in the Standard & Poor's 500 Index
down from an all-time high. The Dow Jones Industrial Average
climbed to a record for a third straight day after a report
said Verizon Communications Inc. may get a takeover bid.

Japan's Bonds May Decline as Stock Rally Limits Demand for Debt Securities

(Bloomberg) -- Japan's government bonds may decline
after stocks advanced, suggesting investors are becoming less
averse to riskier securities.

Benchmark debt is likely to drop for a second day since
concerns over the credit quality of U.S. subprime mortgages
drove the biggest rally in Japan's 10-year bonds since August.
U.S. Treasuries slumped yesterday after the Dow Jones Industrial
Average and the S&P 500 closed at record highs. The Nikkei 225
Stock Average rose, halting a three-day drop.

U.S. Stocks Rally, Sending S&P 500 and Dow Average to Records; Alcoa Gains

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks rallied, sending the
Standard & Poor's 500 Index and Dow Jones Industrial Average to
records, after retailers reported better-than-expected sales and
investors speculated Alcoa Inc. may be bought.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer, posted
its biggest gain in a month after same-store sales tripled
analysts' predictions. Aluminum producer Alcoa led the Dow's
advance as Rio Tinto Group's plan to buy Alcan Inc. spurred
expectations of more takeovers in the metals industry.

U.S. Stocks Gain, Paced by Alcoa, Boeing; S&P 500 Index Rises for 5th Day

(Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks rose and the Standard &
Poor's 500 Index gained for a fifth straight day on speculation
second-quarter earnings will beat analysts' estimates.

Alcoa Inc., the first Dow Jones Industrial Average company
scheduled to report results, paced the 30-stock gauge's
advance. The world's second-biggest aluminum maker will
announce its earnings after the close of trading today. Boeing
Co., the world's second-largest commercial airplane maker,
climbed on reports it received orders for its 787 Dreamliner.

Dow Jones says News Corp. deal not yet reached

(Reuters) - NEW YORK, July 6 - Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. has not yet reached a deal to buy Dow Jones & Co. Inc. as discussions continue, representatives for Dow Jones and its controlling Bancroft family said on Friday.



Talks are continuing over such issues as price, a source familiar with the matter also said on Friday.

(Reuters) - The Dow Jones industrial average was down 17.24
points, or 0.13 percent, at 13,548.60. The Standard & Poor's
500 Index was down 0.96 point, or 0.06 percent, at
1,524.44. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 0.80
point, or 0.03 percent, at 2,655.85.
