FTSE up as M&A boosts; BoE eyed but jitters stick

(Reuters) - The FTSE 100 index of Britain's leading shares edged up 0.2 percent on Monday after a flurry of M&A activity boosted the upside but interest rate concerns and credit uncertainty continued to worry investors.

Fears that a rise in defaults on U.S. subprime mortgage loans could spiral into a broader financial crunch have surrounded global markets since mid-June.

Real estate helps FTSE rally, but worries linger

(Reuters) - Britain's top share index rose on Friday in volatile trade as gains in real estate stocks and banks helped lift the FTSE 100 from four-month lows hit earlier on worries of a potential U.S. credit crunch.

The FTSE 100 index is on course for its biggest weekly fall since January 2003 but by mid-morning investors decided the sell-off had gone far enough for the time being.

FTSE outperforms European markets on GSK, telecoms

(Reuters) - Britain's top share index crawled higher in choppy trade on Wednesday as GlaxoSmithKline and telecoms shares provided support, but worries about the U.S. supbrime market limited gains ahead of key housing data.

At 1150 GMT, Britain's FTSE was up 0.3 percent at 6,518.O after sliding 1.9 percent to a near one-month low in the previous session. The index outperformed benchmarks in Germany and France, which were down sharply.

U.K. Stocks Erase Gains; British Land, Segro and Land Securities Decline

(Bloomberg) -- U.K. stocks erased gains as shares of
British Land Co., Segro Plc and Land Securities Group Plc fell.

The benchmark FTSE 100 Index was little changed at 6585.4 at
11:38 a.m. in London. The measure earlier rose as much as 0.5
percent. The FTSE All-Share Index slid 2.59, or 0.1 percent, to
3405.2. Ireland's ISEQ Index lost 34.13, or 0.4 percent, to 8993.18.

Barclays, GlaxoSmithKline, HSBC, Whitbread: U.K., Irish Equity Preview

(Bloomberg) -- The following stocks may rise or fall

The benchmark FTSE 100 Index fell 19, or 0.3 percent, to
close at 6697.70 in London. The FTSE All-Share Index declined 0.2

U.K. FTSE 100 Benchmark Advances, Paced by BP, Shell; BHP Billiton Gains

(Bloomberg) -- U.K. stocks climbed. BP Plc and Royal
Dutch Shell Plc rose on a positive research note from Deutsche
Bank AG and as the price of crude oil traded near a 10-month
high. Shares of BHP Billiton also gained.

The benchmark FTSE 100 Index climbed 23.80, or 0.4 percent,
to 6659 at 9:50 a.m. in London. The FTSE All-Share Index rose 0.3
percent to 3438.55. Ireland's ISEQ Index jumped 0.4 percent to
9393.20.

Trinity Mirror, Sainsbury, Allied Irish Banks: U.K., Irish Equity Preview

(Bloomberg) -- The following stocks may rise or fall
in U.K. and Irish markets today. Stock symbols are in parentheses
and prices are from yesterday's market close.

The benchmark FTSE 100 Index advanced 49.20, or 0.8 percent,
to close at 6639.80 in London as 89 stocks rose, 12 fell and two
were unchanged. The FTSE All-Share Index
gained 30.52, or 0.9 percent, to 3427.29.

South African Stocks Advance, Paced by Anglo American and Impala Platinum

(Bloomberg) -- South African shares rose for a second
day. Anglo American Plc and Impala Platinum Holdings Ltd. led the
gain as the prices of metals including copper, nickel and
platinum advanced.

The FTSE/JSE Africa All Share Index added 183.30, or 0.6
percent, to 28,886.43 at 10:22 a.m. in Johannesburg, as four
stocks rose for each one that fell.

FTSE down on US sentiment; BoE rate verdict eyed

(Reuters) - The FTSE 100 of Britain's leading shares edged down 0.2 percent on Monday after U.S. stocks fell on Friday on concerns about the impact of tightening credit on takeovers and the subprime mortgage industry.

At 0730 GMT the FTSE 100 was down 13.5 points at 6,594.4, with many investors looking to euro-zone and UK manufacturing PMI data from 0800 GMT for further market direction.

European shares hit by growth fears, US mortgages

(Reuters) - European shares fell early on Wednesday, tracking U.S. and Asian stocks lower on worries about economic growth, the fallout from troubles in the U.S. mortgage market and the effects of a rising yen.

At 0813 GMT, the FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was down 0.5 percent at 1,578.48 points, adding to four successive days of losses, and hitting its lowest in two weeks.

U.K. Benchmark FTSE 100 Recoups Losses; BT Group, Vodafone Shares Advance

(Bloomberg) -- U.K. stocks recovered earlier losses
as BT Group Plc and Vodafone Group Plc advanced.

The benchmark FTSE 100 Index lost 1.6, or less than 0.1
percent, to 6586.8 as of 2:18 p.m. in London after falling as
much as 0.7 percent.

South African Stocks Decline, Led by Anglo American and Impala Platinum

(Bloomberg) -- South Africa's main stock index
declined for a third day, paced by Anglo American Plc and Impala
Platinum Holdings Ltd. as metals prices fell.

The FTSE/JSE Africa All Share Index lost 170.06, or 0.6
percent, to 28,924.26 at 10:07 a.m. in Johannesburg, as 82
stocks dropped, 16 rose and 66 were unchanged.

U.K. Stocks Decline, Paced by Shares of Liberty, Segro, InterContinental

(Bloomberg) -- U.K. stocks dropped, paced by Liberty
International Plc, Segro Plc and InterContinental Hotels Group
Plc.

The benchmark FTSE 100 Index retreated 35, or 0.5 percent,
to 6614.30 in London at 8:05 a.m. The FTSE All-Share Index fell
0.4 percent. Ireland's ISEQ Index dropped 0.8 percent to 9586.18.

FTSE 100 Stocks Rise, Paced by Sainsbury; Morrison, Tesco Shares Advance

(Bloomberg) -- U.K. stocks rose for the third
day. J Sainsbury Plc led shares of retail companies higher
after a Qatar-backed fund increased its stake in the
supermarket chain.

The benchmark FTSE 100 Index added 27, or 0.4 percent,
to 6676.9 in London at 8:59 a.m. The FTSE All-Share Index
gained 0.4 percent to 3451.10. Ireland's ISEQ Index rose
0.8 percent to 9583.61.

European stocks at highest close in over a week

(Reuters) - European shares bounced to their highest close in over a week on Thursday, with banks and oil producers leading the way, with sentiment buoyed by a stronger performance on Wall Street.

The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index ended unofficially up 1.4 percent at 1,603.3, its highest closing level since June 5, recovering from the past week's sell-off.

European shares dip on rising bond yields

(Reuters) - The pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 was down 0.5 percent at 1,566.9, surrending Tuesday's 0.5 percent gain. The index is down about 1 percent in the past week.




U.S. Treasuries recovered from an early slide that drove benchmark yields to a five-year high in Asia trade on Wednesday.
